Debate
A debate is a structured argument between two opposing sides of a resolution.
Debate Basics
Resolution - the statement or topic at the center of a debate. (NSDA Resolutions)
Affirmative - the side that affirms or says "yes" to the resolution.
Negative - the side that negates or says "no" to the resolution.
Types of Debate
Lincoln Douglas: One-on-one values debate, lasting 45 minutes, centered around resolutions that rotate every two months.
Public Forum: Two-on-two current event debate, lasting 45 minutes, centered around resolutions that rotate every month.
Policy Debate: Two-on-two policy debate, lasting 90 minutes, centered around a year-long resolution.
Congress: Multiple student debate, lasting 90 minutes, centered around student-created bills and resolutions.
Special Formats
World Schools: A five-on-five debate centered around a variety of preset and extemporaneous topics.
Big Questions: Typically a one-on-one debate centered around an abstract, philosophical topic.
Extemporaneous Debate: A short one-on-one debate centered around extemporaneous topics prepared 30 mins before the round.
